Flipnote Hatena Weekly News: May 7, 2010

Hello Flipnote Users!!

Here is what Aaron said on the Flipnote Hatena Weeekly news blog:

Hello from all of us at Hatena in Kyoto, and welcome to this week’s edition of our news blog.

The Flipnote team is now back from 5 days off from work and we’re refreshed and recharged, and busy making some fun new stuff for you. We’ve been releasing new Creator’s Rooms themes every week for the past several months, but since we were out of the office for the past few days we were not able to add any new ones this week. Hopefully we’ll have some new themes available soon.

Recently, some Flipnote Hatena users have been contacting us about Black stars and wondering if they exist or not. The words “Black Star” appeared in the Japanese version of the Flipnote Hatena news blog about 2 weeks ago, and some people got excited about that thinking that we’d added some new types of color stars. Unfortunately, the truth was lost in translation, so I thought I should explain what a “Black Star” is.

In Japan, the Creator’s Rooms themes have names, and the bonus theme that you could earn for exchanging 2 themes during the Color Star Exchange opening campaign was called “Black Star” (Hatena doesn’t have names for the individual Creator’s Rooms themes for foreign markets). So, just to make things clear — Black stars only exist in the sky and as a Creator’s Room theme, and are not a type of Hatena color star!

Lastly, we’ve had a few problems recently involving children buying color stars on the Hatena website without getting permission from their parents. This is something that we’re really not happy about, and we’d like to share our thoughts about this.

Color stars were designed to be fun, and are a way to express your feelings in a new way. When you see a Flipnote or comment that you like you can add a star to it. You can also exchange color stars for news themes for your Creator’s Room in the Color Star Exchange. It’s a lot of fun, isn’t it?

However, when you do something such as using someone’s money without their permission that goes against the whole concept of color stars. Color stars are no longer “fun” if someone gets hurt, or if a child buys something from us without getting their parent’s permission first. Kids, please talk with your parents before buying color stars on the Hatena website, and you should never buy them unless you have their permission.

Also, don’t forget that you can earn color stars for free by doing various activities on Hatena’s online services, which doesn’t require any money or a credit card. Simply by doing your best to be a positive part of the Hatena community, you can earn some color stars that you can use with your Hatena account.
